The Slight Difference Between Tinted Moisturizer and Other Products

Don’t let the beauty alphabet overwhelm you! The differences between the products are slight, and while you may have set out in search of the best tinted moisturizer, we’re certain that a few other products would meet your needs, too.

  • Tinted Moisturizer. The name pretty much says it all. This is a moisturizer with a slight dash of color added in order to provide you with light coverage – much lighter than traditional foundations.
  • Foundation. Foundations come in a wide range of options, from powder to liquid and heavy coverage to medium coverage.

In general, this type of foundation is great for special events, in the workplace or when you’re looking for the highest level of coverage possible.

  • BB Cream. The “BB” stands for “blemish balm” and are similar to tinted moisturizers; however, they do offer slightly more coverage than the latter.
  • CC Cream. The Color Corrector – or CC – cream is specifically formulated to help correct redness in the skin and to help control excess oil.

If you have oily skin, then a CC cream might be better than a tinted moisturizer.

  • DD Cream. Daily Defense creams are yet another hybrid of the other products we just mentioned! The “DD” actually has different meanings, depending on how the manufacturer markets the products. Some call it the Dynamic Do-All cream or Dermatologically Defining cream.

So what does it do? It supposedly mixes the benefit of tinted moisturizer, BB cream and CC cream all into one. (But wait, isn’t that what a lot of foundations do already)?

It’s all about the marketing of a product, beauty friends! Stick with a tinted moisturizer, CC cream or BB cream and you’ll be fine. They all offer the same amount of coverage compared to regular foundation.

How to Apply Tinted Moisturizer

There are so many opinions on the subject so it is hard to say who is right or wrong, but many manufacturers design these products to be applied with the fingers. That’s what makes them so great for travel or to carry in the purse because you don’t need to haul around a full kit of brushes and sponges in order to apply it!

If you don’t like using your fingers, a stippling brush is probably your next best bet.

There is also the current rage in the makeup world: a silicone sponge! The original – called the Silisponge – is awesome, but if you don’t want to wait for it to come into stock and prefer to spend less, then we found an alternative brand that works just as good.

Top 5 Best Tinted Moisturizer Reviews

So which is the best tinted moisturizer on our list? That depends who wears it!

Look, we all have different skin tones and skin types and it’s not always easy to find a product to match.

Below, we provide you with details about the top 5 products from our table. If they don’t come in your shade, they’re too expensive or they irritate your skin, then you can still check out the other great options in our table!

1. Revision Intellishade SPF 45

Revision’s Intellishade is a pretty impressive product and we would gladly plunk down the money for another bottle of this.

If you were looking for a product that can moisturize, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, provide you with UV protection and yield smoother skin without heavy coverage, then this is exactly what you need.

It actually comes in two formulas: original (this one) and matte. The matte is great for oily skin or evening looks and the original seemed to be best for daywear when you want to lock in a bit more moisture.

They claim that one shade will match every skin tone, but based on common opinion, it is probably good for medium tones at maximum. If you have dark skin, this might not be dark enough for you but it does have kind of a yellow undertone and might work for some of those in between colors.

The coverage is amazing and it is a dream to apply. We are hooked!

2. EltaMD UV Daily Broad-Spectrum SPF 40

This product is quite unique and a great choice is you want a product that offers you the sheerest coverage possible.

Designed more as a tinted sunscreen moisturizer, the hyaluronic acid it contains also throws in a bit of anti-aging help in order to smooth out your skin tone.

It’s like wearing makeup without putting on makeup!

Whether you’re 25, 35 or 65, this will provide you with natural coverage and awesome UV protection. It is especially recommended for those who have just experienced a skin procedure.

3. Bare Minerals Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream

BareMinerals is definitely one of the top contenders on our list and while they choose a fancier name for their tinted moisturizer (tinted hydrating cream gel!?), it still works the same as any of the others.

16 shades? Wow! Way more than some of the others we looked at.

In this product, they’ve combined the powers of a CC cream, a BB cream and a sunscreen in order to provide your skin with all types of benefits. We would say that anyone looking for sheer to medium coverage will be able to find a shade match and we absolutely love that it is free of parabens, fragrance, oil and silicone.

This is seriously a great product and it was even a 2016 Glammy Award Winner (it won in its category!)

It’s more affordable and more natural than some of the other choices on our list, so we highly recommend it!

4. NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer

There is no denying that NARS makes great cosmetic products, but in this price range, we can see why some of you might skip over it.

If you can factor it into your beauty budget, then their Pure Radiant Tinted moisturizer is certainly worth every penny.

One of the reasons we love this product is the fact that it comes in 12 different shades, making it easy to find a skin tone match for many of you with an in-between color.

In action, we have to say that it is quite an amazing product. It starts out sheer but you can easily build up the coverage on areas of your face that need it (red patches, for example) and the smell is pleasant.

As a tinted moisturizer, this is something you can apply with your fingers but might also apply with a stippling brush. Sponges and other types of brushes might end up soaking up too much product, so we would avoid those.

This is everything that a tinted moisturizer should be and if you have the extra money, buy it at least once to try it!

5. Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20

Are there any of you out there with oily skin in need of a tinted moisturizer?

We thought so, and this is the answer!

Laura Mercier’s oil-free tinted moisturizer is fabulous and gives you that light, sheer coverage you expect from a tinted moisturizer and they have a whopping 15 shades to choose from (way more than most other brands).

This provides you with a demi matte finish and can be applied with either the fingertips or a sponge (of course they recommend their own brand of sponge!) They don’t actually suggest using a brush but we’re sure you could without a problem.

Again, a great moisturizer for those of you with excessive amounts of oil in the T-zone!
